Political Disconnectivism may not be a real term (or even a real word, in the case of "disconnectivism"), but it accurately describes my current feelings towards politics right now. Simply put, the term describes an entity that was once connected to the real-world implications of politics, but due to a life-changing event could now care less (hence, the "disconnect-" part of the term).
As I am a historian by training (of American History, to boot), I have a keen sense of place when it comes to American Politics. I've studied American Politics from a historical perspective for over 15 years and have always had an interest in modern politics since such events are part of my continuous learning process regarding American political history (and maybe more importantly, the politics of history itself).
But I have recently gone through a series of life-changing events. Suddenly, American politics, American political history, and the day-to-day machinations of realpolitik are practically meaningless to me. It's almost as if from one to the next, that which once defined me ceased to matter, and a new reality had taken it's place. I got to thinking: this must be exactly the same feeling that evangelical Christians experience when they go through their rebirth process.
Before you jump to conclusions, I have not had a religious or spiritual conversion, I haven't joined a cult, and I have not become a nihilist (well, any more than usual). Nor have I had children, saved the whales, or any such thing. Let's just say that once you're aware of the natural order of the world around you, nothing else really matters but fulfilling your role in it.
